Shootout near US Consulate puts Turkey’s brand on Defense

July 10, 2008

A shootout near the US consulate in Istanbul, Turkey in July 2008 tarnished the perception that Turkey is a safe tourism destination. Investing millions in infrastructure, security and public relations & ad campaigns, the Turkish government, has, and will continue to promote the country as a safe place to visit. Intending to battle terrorism and increase visitor safety, the Turkish government has its challenges. A record of terrorist attacks has equally plagued other countries from the UK to Egypt, and Spain. Not widely publicized, the current effort is predicted to include a very positive spin on the culture, safety and attributes of travel to Turkey. Let’s face it, shootouts can occur in small towns in the US, as well. Perhaps a worldwide effort to educate the public on security and disaster issues should be instituted in this global travel environment where anything goes.

Where to go on vacation? Stalin’s retreat, Abkhazia! Palm trees, subtropical summers and a breath-taking coastline, attract over 250,000 vacation travelers to Turkey’s breakaway republic, Abkhazia. While it looks like a war zone, and half a dozen explosions in recent weeks have killed four people and injured about 20 more, the mines from war of nearly a decade ago are being removed by the U.K-based Halo Trust.

Abkhazia has been isolated from the rest of the world for over 10 years, and though Russia bolstered its military presence in Abkhazia, undermining U.S. ally Georgia’s bid to join NATO the tourists do line up to go there. You can almost count on a long wait in extreme heat. Just a short drive from Sochi, the southern Russian Black Sea resort that will host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, the region has much rebuilding to do before the Games begin.

Beautiful coastline flanked by mountains and the world’s largest caves with an underground railway are a few attractions on this rare vacation to Abkhazia.
